St. Petersburg is known as the city of tolerance. You can find here churches of all major religions but this tour focuses on Russian Orthodox Churches. The tour starts with a visit to Peter and Paul's Fortress and an inside tour of Peter and Paul's Cathedral where Russian Emperors from Peter the Great through Nicolas II are buried, as well as the tombs of other members of the royal family. A number of interesting buildings complete the ensemble of the Fortress.
During your tour you will visit the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, located on the main street Nevski Avenue. It encircles a small square with a double row of columns forming an impressive colonnade. The cathedral was named after a "miracle-making" icon of Our Lady of Kazan which is now there attracting thousands of believers who wish to worship it.
Then you will drive to the St. Nicolas Naval Cathedral. The area was originally settled by Russian sailors in the time of Peter the Great and St. Nicolas is the patron saint of sailors. The St. Nicolas Naval Cathedral was one of a few St. Petersburg churches that were not closed by the Bolsheviks after the 1917 revolution.
